Wooden Drascombe
Name: Skomer
Type: Lugger
Builder: Kelly and Hall
Year: c1970
Owner: Rufus Harding
Some
history from Doug Elliott:- "An educated guess of when she was
built would be 1970. The internal layout etc was not built that way from
new, it must have been adapted at a later date."
And some more:- "A bit of extra Drascombe history information
that I used to identify the year Skomer was built at K&H . The mizzen
mast is square section and tapered on the early boats, also the rudder
guide is all metal rather than a smaller metal guide set in a wooden pad,
and you can see in the photos that the rudder guide shows the rudder has
a leading edge to the blade in front of the shaft, this was altered on
later boats. The clincher is the nameplate, this would have been for the
old address at Newton Ferrers, tel. number Newton Ferrers 457 only used
before they moved to Yealmbridge. The nameplate and telephone number was
different after that, it was a Yealmpton tel number, so the old name plates
would not have been used. I like the touch of the wooden bullseyes added
by someone for the centreplate haul and the mizzzen sheet lead, but not
too keen on the for'd locker and breakwater for appearance. although quite
practical."
