Wooden Drascombes
John Watkinson
Off to the Mediterranean
In 1964 John Watkinson decided to sell the boatyard, head for the Mediterranean
sun to live on a boat. He bought a 13 ton ketch named "Sunset" which he
completely refitted. In due course, the boatyard was sold and John Watkinson
with his wife Kate and young son James sailed to a new life in the sun.
However, it was to be quite short lived: The weather that year saw some
of the worst storms for a long time and at one stage, "Sunset" had her
coachroof under water in one bad storm. The result of this was a family
decision that this was not to be and a "For Sale" notice was put on "Sunset"
at the marina where she was moored and a long train journey back to England
followed.
